Trip Description:

Bariloche, Argentina is the adventure capital of Patagonia. Located directly in the middle of a national park the size of Yellowstone, and perched on the banks of turquoise blue Nahuel Huapi Lake, Bariloche is an adventure paradise.

The largest mountain in the Lakes District area is Cerro Tronador. Located on the border of Argentina and Chile, Mountain Professionals offers exciting trips to climb to the 3,554m summit of the Argentine Peak of Mt. Tronador. Beginners will learn the necessary skills to trek and climb to the summit of this amazing peak in the heart of northern Patagonia!

The goal of this trip is to provide aspirant mountaineers who are looking to gain alpine climbing skills, the tools to climb in glaciated terrain and to continue climbing on future peaks. It is also a chance for the beginner who just simply has the dream to summit a Andean peak the chance to climb a fantastic mountain and gain some skills along the way! 

This trip begins in the brand new, modern airport of Bariloche, which is an easy connect direct connect from Buenos Aires or from Santiago, Chile. Mountain Professionals staff will meet you there and transport you to a 4 star hotel in the town center.

The following day, we take a private transport to the base of Mt. Tronador at Pampa Linda. There we take in stunning views of the peak and the Rio Manso. We will hike for approximately 4 hours to the hut known as Refugio Meiling where we will enjoy unmatched scenery of the glacial lakes and snowy peaks of Argentina and Chile.

TronadorWe will spend the next 2 days learning the basics of glacier travel and climbing skills needed to ascend the Argentine Peak and future mountaineering objectives. You will benefit from the instruction from our world-class, international mountaineering instructors.

Our aim is to make an ascent of the mountain the following day. This is a moderately technical ascent involving glacier travel and an exciting finish on one of the most prized summits of the area.

We will descend to Pampa Linda and catch a transport to Bariloche the following day. There we will sample the world famous steak and wine of Argentina in one of the many Parillas located in town.

Mountain Professionals is based in Bariloche and has an unprecedented opportunity to provide adventure expeditions in the area. We have full time American and Argentine staff living and working in the area, we know the logistics, mountains, and lakes of the area, and after all it is our back yard! Don't forget the steak and wine to sample in Argentina!

Skills covered in course include: crampon use, ice axe, alpine climbing skills, rope team travel, snow and ice anchors, glacier travel, crevasse rescue systems, and discussions on avalanche hazards and route finding as well as glaciology. 

Projected Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive in Bariloche, Argentina, transfer to hotel, welcome dinner

Day 2: Transport to Pampa Linda, Trailhead, hike to high camp

Day 3: Alpine skills day, review crampons, ice axe, rope-team travel

Day 4: Additional alpine skills and more advanced topics 

Day 5: Summit attempt to Argentine Peak

Day 6: Hike down to Pampa Linda, afternoon transport to Bariloche and hotel with celebration dinner

Day 7: Transport to Airport
